Peta Carey’s The Hollows Boys tells the story of helicopter deer recovery in Fiordland through the lives of three brothers, Gary, Mark and Kim Hollows. It reveals the true cost of an era fuelled by adrenalin, fast money, and beset by accidents and fatalities.

Last month in tramping history
Save the Heaphy Track campaign launched
April 1973
Proposals to build a road following the Heaphy Track became the subject of public controversy in March 1973. The local West Coast and Collingwood populations and councils largely supported the idea, believing a new highway would increase the access and popularity of their areas. ‘The Organisation to Preserve the Heaphy’ was formed in April 1973. FMC and Forest & Bird were also opposed to the road. The massive public outcry led to a marked increase in trampers walking the track. For example, during the 1973–74 New Year period, 82 people sheltered inside 6-bunk Gouland Downs Hut. In 1976 the government announced that the proposed road would not proceed.

Tony’s photo was submitted as part of our Walk1200km #microchallenges. Each month we set three new #microchallenges. Complete them and be entered to win over $200 in prizes!
