Triangle Hut was renovated by Backcountry Trust volunteers in February 2024. It sleeps six, with adequate camping space around it as well.

The location is attractive, situated on the confluence of tributaries flowing down from high points Mangamahue to the northwest and Te Hekenga to the northeast.

The hut is reached by travelling the broad tussock tops of the Whanahuia Range before dropping into the valley.

Poll results

On Monday we asked Wilderness Daily readers if winter approaching and noticeably shorter days changes their tramping plans.

The results are in: 44% of you will tramp as normal - just with different gear, 32% of you will switch to more day walks and less overnights and 24% of you will tramp only in urban environments until the weather warms back up.

Here is a selection of comments from readers:

“More enjoyable for the kids to do day walks in winter and it means we explore our local area more.”

“Same mountains different experience. The changing seasons keep them from being same old same old. What’s not to like!”

“Winter is skiing and snowboarding prime time. Finished on the trail for this summer!”
