Quiz
It has been a sunny day, and the forecast is good. You arrive at a stream that is normally ankle deep. Today it seems knee deep, but it is hard to tell as the water is off colour. It is only about four steps to cross, but the current is flowing faster than walking pace. You should:
A - Choose the place to cross carefully and cross using a strong stick.
B - Wait for someone else to come and cross using the mutual support method.
C - Throw your pack across so you have better balance and cross using a strong stick.

Quiz
Answer D - Wait until the water levels go down.
If in doubt, stay out.
The water is likely off colour due to high rainfall upstream. Since you can’t see the bottom, there could be obstacles and entrapments below the surface.
A current faster than walking pace indicates it is too fast. Our rivers tend to rise and fall quickly, so the best option is wait for the levels to fall.
