It started with Lookout Knob, then came Peter Knob, Brown Knob, Caesar Knob and Bare Knob. Now Aimee Jules and her partner Oscar are on a mission to climb every knob in New Zealand, from 200m lookouts to 2000m summits.
Aimee, a Nelson-based photographer and videographer, has long loved adventure filmmaking. She has directed and produced two short films following other people’s expeditions, but for her next project, she wanted to push herself and explore filmmaking through something she was doing.
The idea to climb all of NZ's knobs (137 according to LINZ) emerged when Oscar and a workmate were chatting. The mission – with no deadline – began in January last year. “It’s kind of hilarious, and that’s the whole point,” says Jules.

Hillary and Tenzing summit Mt Everest
29 May 1953
The ninth attempt to climb Mt Everest began from the Nepalese side, ascending the Khumbu Ice Fall and the Lhotse Face to the South Col. This massive mountaineering expedition was led by British Army Colonel John Hunt, but was organised and financed by the joint Himalayan Committee. After the initial assault failed, Sherpa Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary reached the summit on 29 May. News of the expedition’s success reached London in time to be released on the morning of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation on 2 June 1953. Hillary and Hunt were both knighted.
