Ask any Tararua tramper and they’ll confirm that Bannister has a reputation. An edgy ridge scramble, river crossings and, of course, the notorious Tararua weather make for more type two fun than many would like. But for those who don’t shy away from a bit of suffering this two-to-three-day mission rewards with spectacular terrain and panoramic views.

Bannister is one of our 75 Top Trampers’ Peaks.

Missed Friday’s feature? More paid parking on the way after trial raises $1.5 million, can Florida serve as a cautionary tale for NZ conservation land, DOC to vaccinate endangered native birds against bird flu threat and more in last week’s The World Outdoors.

Deaths on Tararua Southern Crossing

15 July 2009

Kiwis were shocked to learn of the demise of two trampers in the rugged Tararua Range north of Wellington.

The chief executive of the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, Seddon Bennington (61), and family friend Marcella ‘Rosie’ Jackson (54) disappeared on July 11, 2009.

Authorities were alerted when the pair failed to return from a weekend attempt of the Southern Crossing. They had climbed for about 10km from Ōtaki Forks but were caught in a sudden southerly storm. On July 15 their bodies were recovered, well off the track, just a kilometre short of Kime Hut. Both had died from hypothermia.
