Hut of the week 🏡
Carkeek Hut, Tararua Forest Park
High above the Waiohine River, Carkeek stands at the heart of what was once a dense network of cullers’ tracks scoring the ridges and valleys. They’re mostly lost to the bush now, but volunteer efforts have kept enough routes viable that the six-bunk Carkeek Hut is still a classic destination.
The hut was originally built in 1962-63 as a standard S70 deer-culling hut by the New Zealand Forest Service. In February of 2022 the hut received a new roof and a leaking window was fixed. Read more about the repairs from the Backcountry Trust.
Whether it’s over a weekend for a ‘Carkeek Picnic’ or the more standard four to five day route, you’ll traverse some of the Tararua’s finest tops and goblin forests to reach this gem.
