This straightforward overnight loop to the Poulter Valley and Casey Hut is a perfect opportunity for trampers to get a taste of Arthur’s Pass National Park’s scenic interior.
It’s deemed an ‘advanced’ tramping track by DOC due to the mountainous environment and unbridged stream crossings; however, travel is generally easy through well-marked forest, gentle saddles, and open valley flats says writer Jesse Wiltshire.

This month in tramping history
Stanton Search, Mt Ruapehu
31 August 1931
On the rocky slopes west of the Whakapapa ski field stands a bronze memorial plaque that remembers 18-year-old Warwick Stanton. Fourteen university students were caught out in poor weather as they descended Mt Ruapehu. Unfortunately they dropped into the Whakapapaiti Gorge instead of the Whakapapa Valley. The entire party spent a night sheltering near a rock, then split into three groups. Stanton set off with a companion to get help but failed to arrive. His body was found in dense bush after three weeks of searching. He had probably succumbed to exhaustion.
