Members of the band Crash Bandihoot hauled a 13kg sousaphone, a bass drum and full horn section to Powell Hut, where they played a concert to raise money for Forest & Bird.

Standard conservation fundraising tends to lean on urgency and loss but Michael Pi and his bandmates think there is another way to do it, and this gig is one way to show it.

“I think people are much more likely to stay engaged if there’s some joy and celebration, even when the issues are very serious,” Pi says. “Conservation can often feel like an overwhelming task or problem. Any situation where you get together and make it communal makes things feel more manageable and like you’re part of a team.”

The gig itself was in two parts. The first was a sunset pre-show set on the helipad braving -6C wind chills and an hour long set inside the much more pleasant Powell Hut. Costume dress was encouraged and while there is no plan for a follow up, the band hasn’t ruled it out.

Poll results

On Monday we asked Wilderness Daily readers if they’ve walked the Cape Brett Track.

The results are in: 49% haven’t, 42% of you have, and 9% of you are inspired to walk the track after reading our story on it.

Here is a selection of comments from our readers:

“Walked it twice, once when I was pregnant and then again with my son when he turned 30!”

“We did this walk a few years back with our daughter who was 7 at the time. It’s a good introductory walk for younger trampers and worth staying a couple of nights to enjoy the coast and all the wildlife”

“I’d walk it again if able. We had an amazing overnighter at the hut. One of the best.”

“Twice, once in 1968 before it was a thing and there were still lighthouse keepers.”
